CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“Why can’t we summon him?” Mori threw the ball he was playing with into the air and caught it in his big hands.

“We’ve been over this.” I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration. “We can’t summon higher demons out of Hell, just like Father can’t summon us back to Hell.”

“We used to be able to.”

“Yes, and we also used to be princes of Hell. And now we’re not.” We’d done more than turn our back on our father that day. We’d turned our back on Hell, too, along with several of our more convenient powers. Fortunately, we’d managed to hold on to our portal keys during our escape, allowing us to travel between Hell and Earth if required. Not that they did us much good in this situation. Going back into Hell ourselves was just asking for trouble. None of us doubted that Father wouldn’t let us walk away a second time. “Maybe we could try the mages again? I know they can cast a spell to send a message…perhaps we just need to come up with something to incentivise them.”

I’d been going out of my mind since Oscar had left. How I’d gone from not giving a fuck about my hookups to not coping with being away from Oscar for forty-eight hours was beyond me. I couldn’t say I cared though. It was like Oscar’s arrival had switched on a light in my life, and now I couldn’t adjust back to the darkness. In order to distract me, I’d asked Mori to come to the bookshop when Harlow relieved him. We’d spent the time brainstorming ways to alert Dagon to the threat to his life. Best-case scenario, it would be the incentive for him to finally break away from under Father’s thumb and join us topside. Worst case, it would put him on high alert and keep him alive.

“Good luck with that,” Mori grunted. “Mages are tricky fuckers at the best of times. They’ve already said no once. If we go to them again, it’ll show how desperate we are.”

“What other option do we ha—Fuck!”

The emotions slammed into me, one after the other.

Terror.

Pain.

Fear.

Bolting to my feet, I grabbed Mori’s arm. “Oscar.”

With no other words needed, we sprinted to the roof. Neither of us stopped to remove our shirts, letting the strips of fabric float to the ground as we launched into the air.

“What’s happened?” Mori asked as I turned in the direction of the bond, forcing my wings to work harder.

“I don’t know,” I said through gritted teeth. “All I know is he’s scared and hurting.”

Mori cursed under his breath. “Harlow must be safe. We’d know if he wasn’t. No matter what’s going on, he won’t let anything happen to Oscar. Harlow knows what he means to you. We all do.”

I did know Harlow would do everything to keep Oscar safe. It was the only thing stopping the panic from crushing me. I beat my wings faster, cutting through the air quicker than ever before. Mori fell behind, unable to keep up with the punishing pace.
